#93 - The Revolution Will Not be Televised

"Mass communication, radio, and especially television, have attempted, not without success, to annihilate every possibility of solitude and reflection."
Eugenio Montale

Average Daily TV Viewing Time in Selected Countries 2012
(stats from Statista.com)

USA 293 mins (4h 53mins)
UK 241 mins (4h 1min)
Spain 246 mins (4h 6mins)
Italy 255 mins (4h 15mins)
Ireland 203 mins (3h 23mins)
Germany 222 mins (3h 42mins)
France 230 mins (3h 50mins)
China 164 mins (2h 44mins)

A few things came to mind looking at these stats:

1) TV is an addiction, and if these are averages, then there are those who watch more television than this every day.

2) If mastery or genius in a specific field really does require 10,000 hours of appropriate practise then the average television viewer in the UK could achieve this in 6.8 years (5.5 years in the USA) if they sacrificed television.

3) A lot of people who say "I'd love to ___________ but I don't have any time" are lying.

Interestingly, despite the fact 65-70% of Americans consider television addictive and it shares commonalities with other behavioural addictions such as drug addiction and gambling i) there has been little empirical research on television addiction ii) there are no clear parameters as to the difference between "normal" and "problem" tv viewing and iii) addiction can happen at any age.

And finally, it's only right I finish with....
