#114 - Healthy Selfishness

Perhaps thanks to the religious beliefs that influenced my upbringing I grew up putting other people first. I learned the hard way that this isn't the wisest gameplan. It's a beautiful thing to give to others but without giving to ourselves first we can end up depleted, resentful and sick.

The word selfishness has negative connotations but I think a certain level of selfishness is both healthy and necessary. This kind of selfishness, the selfishness of respecting and valuing yourself and what you want, the selfishness that doesn't hurt others I call healthy selfishness.
